My Reading Habits

In the last couple of months, I’ve read quite a number of books, which is not of my kind if I look back into my life for the last 3-4 years. However, before the start of 2010 I took reading as one of my primary resolutions and I think till now I am able to keep up with this resolution. I was an avid reader but since the inception of my professional (sitting job in the office in front of the computer) career, I started missing this habit of mine badly. I don’t want to give excuses, but traveling to and from office, then whole day of exhaustive office works along with occasional extended lunch breaks, unnecessary tea breaks, late night movies, eating out, and many more other factors contributed immensely to reduce my reading habits.

However, I got the right opportunity to regain my former reading habit that almost went into coma, when due to back pains I stopped ridding my bike to office and started traveling most of the parts by Metro. Immediately books started to accompany me during my one and half hour Metro journey everyday. I started with the Artemis Fowl series, which my wife had been suggesting from last year. I tried to start the Book I of the series a few times earlier but due to the kind of my very busy schedule, I couldn’t. However, this time I completed Book I at one go and it was really satisfactory. Then I bought Book II and it was over in no time. The series was so engrossing that I find it difficult to miss the opportunity of reading the next books and completed Book III and IV by the mid of April. Right now, I’m reading Book V. However, I won’t give any account of the series, except that it is very interesting and I have positioned it right after Harry Potter in my favorite list. Sometime later may be I will write a review on the complete series once I complete reading all the books (Book VII is scheduled to release on coming July :-)).

Apart from the Artemis Fowl series, I’ve also read a few other books including the complete 1st volume of the Adventures of Feluda by Satyajit Ray (which is actually a re-read, I’m a great fan of Feluda stories), A Fine Balance – Novel by Rohinton Mistry, Calcutta Chromosome by Amitav Ghosh, and a couple of good graphic novels. It’s not much worth mentioning that I enjoyed all of them as if I don’t like a book, I can’t complete it. I can never read for the sake of reading, except, yes, of course, how I could forget about my academic books. Among these different reads, I found Calcutta Chromosome very absorbing, but at the same time it’s a bit complicated and still after completing the book, I am not clear about some facts in the story. I think I’ve to re-read it in the coming days.

So, this is my newly regained reading habit. Now, I’ve realized how badly I was missing the delights of reading earlier. I still remember the days when I read the Harry Potter series staying awake till late night even though there’s office next morning. Immediately after the release of the 5th book of Harry Potter series, I had to travel to Hyderabad. So, I bought the book and completed it in the train journey (about 22 hrs, without a single minute of sleep). I think I can’t be that dedicated now, but will try to maintain this habit to enjoy and walk into the world of books regularly (sometimes into another world created by the authors)

For update, I’m reading the Book V of Artemis Fowl series as you know. But, I’ve also started reading Twilight, the Book I of the Twilight Saga, today morning. It is a must-read recommendation from Yasmin, who completed all the four books in the series in less than a week time. So, this is it for today, a post in my blog after a drought of almost one and half months. But I think I can soon come up with my latest updates on movies. Not a bad but really handy idea :-).
